Job Retraining

Once an injured employee has recovered sufficiently from his or her injuries to begin considering future employment, the workers' compensation statute provides for the payment of vocational rehabilitation services by the insurer. Vocational rehabilitation or retraining may mean anything from assistance with the drafting of a competitive resume and job placement support, to a full blown academic program including tuition payments. The rules which govern whether an individual employee qualifies for these benefits are difficult to summarize. Each situation tends to be treated differently, depending upon the extent of one's permanent physical restrictions, past work experience, age, education and a number of other factors. Some people with the most serious injuries do not qualify for any services because their chances are poor for returning to the work force.
